JooJoo ship date pushed to March 25 due to manufacturing issues

2010
02.26

Well, that didn’t take too long. Just a day after we pondered the shipping status of Fusion Garage’s JooJoo tablet, the company’s come clean and told us shipping will delayed to March 25 because of a manufacturing issue with the tablet’s 12.1-inch capacitive screen. Yep, it looks like it’s going to be at least 27 more days until you’ve got a JooJoo of your very own — which means, of course, that Fusion Garage will now be trying to launch this thing during the same week Apple’s scheduled to launch the iPad. Ouch. To its credit, Fusion Garage says it’s not happy with the delay and has promised a free accessory to pre-order customers to make it better — we’re told it’s likely to be the $30 stand. We’ll see if that’s enough to hold back the effects of Cupertino’s coming media blitz, but either way we’re quite excited about making a tablet sandwich at the end of March. Full PR after the break.

It’s easier to teach compliance than initiative

2010
02.26

Compliance is simple to measure, simple to test for and simple to teach. Punish non-compliance, reward obedience and repeat.

Initiative is very difficult to teach to 28 students in a quiet classroom. It’s difficult to brag about in a school board meeting. And it’s a huge pain in the neck to do reliably.

Schools like teaching compliance. They’re pretty good at it.

To top it off, until recently the customers of a school or training program (the companies that hire workers) were buying compliance by the bushel. Initiative was a red flag, not an asset.

Of course, now that’s all changed. The economy has rewritten the rules, and smart organizations seek out intelligent problem solvers. Everything is different now. Except the part about how much easier it is to teach compliance.

Two quotes and two links for a snow day

2010
02.25

Arianna Huffington: “Self expression is the new entertainment, We never used to question why people sit on the couch
for seven hours a day watching bad TV. Nobody ever asked, ‘Why are they
doing that for free?’ We need to celebrate [this desire to contribute for free] rather than
question it.”

Tim Cook at Apple: “This is the most focused company I know of, am aware of, or have any
knowledge of… We say no to good ideas every day.” Cook then pointed out to analysts that every single product the company makes would fit on the single conference table in front of him. “And
we had revenue last year of $40 billion.”

Bonus audio interview: my hyperbolic rants and a few insights about the future of ebooks. Double last-minute bonus: an audio interview about linchpins and software and startups.

And a bonus simple productivity tip, which I’ve been accidentally doing for years.

Sony exec says PSP Go ‘confused’ consumers, might have been too expensive

2010
02.25

Well, we’ve already heard some rumors that Sony was considering a relaunch of sorts for the PSP Go, and it looks like at least some execs from the company are now starting to speak publicly about why such a move might be necessary. In an interview with IndustryGamers, SCEA Senior Vice President of Publisher Relations Rob Dyer admitted that the PSP Go did “confuse” customers, and that the “higher price point didn’t help matters any either” — not exactly the sort of thing you hear Sony say every day. Does that mean we’ll be seeing updated hardware or a lower price anytime soon? Dyer unsurprisingly wouldn’t say when pressed, adding only that Sony is “going back and re-communicating” with consumers.

Adafruit is in the Square payment pilot, awesomeness will likely ensue

2010
02.25

Our good friends at Adafruit Industries are now taking mobile payments with the best of ‘em thanks to a prerelease Square dongle they’ve managed to score, ostensibly as a part of the public trial announced earlier this month. They’ve posted a quick video showing the process of taking someone’s cash via plastic, and it looks every bit as painless as Square makes it out to be — just swipe, sign with your fingertip, and your Square-equipped payee is a few dollars richer. The particular dongle Adafruit’s been provided looks rough to say the least — these aren’t the units you’ll be getting off the shelf — but that’s part of the fun of being involved with a beta, isn’t it? Head over to Adafruit to peep the video, and needless to say, we’re curious to see how they plan to make use of this little bugger.
