Cox TV Connect app brings more live cable TV streaming to iPads

2011
12.05

The list of pay-TV providers that don’t have an app that turns your iPad into another TV screen has grown one shorter today, as Cox Communications announced its Cox TV Connect app. Like other apps from Cablevision, Time Warner, and DirecTV it’s restricted to use within the home (and for jailbreakers, judging by error code 144 you may be restricted once again) while connected to Cox internet service. The description promises “over 35 ” channels available, a glance at the listing on Cox’s support site reveals a distinct lack of Viacom offerings (Spike is shown in the screenshots, but isn’t on the list), which isn’t surprising given the video giant’s legal wrangling over other similar apps. We’re not seeing any support for any kind of second screen interaction with what’s on TV or remote control features, although the existing Mobile Connect apps have some of that covered. It does however support viewing on up to 5 tablets at once, so if your family is squeezed for screens this may be just the ticket, check after the break for a press release or hit the iTunes link below to download the free app.

[Thanks, Stephen]

Fujitsu Arrows ES IS12F coming to Japan next year: thick name, thin phone

2011
12.05

KDDI‘s au network in Japan has revealed that it’ll be stocking the slender Fujitsu Arrows ES IS12F starting January 2012. Fujitsu fans may recall seeing a very similar handset with the same (mostly) 6.7mm profile when NTT DoCoMo’s version sashayed into those stuffy FCC offices. The phone runs on a single core processor, which is responsible for powering the image-stabilizing five megapixel camera and Gingerbread OS. The 4-inch, 480 x 800 AMOLED screen is cocooned in the same water resistant armor found on other Arrows devices, helping to protect those essential keitai functions like the One-Seg digital TV tuner and IR receiver. The skinny smartphone will go on sale in both black and red options on KIDDI, while NTT DoCoMo customers will have to settle for black.

Carrier IQ VP says software poses no threat to user privacy, backs up his argument with metaphor

2011
12.03

The final chapter of the Carrier IQ saga has yet to be written, but at this juncture, even the rosiest of rose-tinted observers would be hard pressed to find a silver lining. The specter of federal investigation looms larger by the day. Implicated carriers and manufacturers are washing their hands with Macbethian fury. Al Franken is on the verge of going Al Franken. And at the epicenter of all this sits Carrier IQ — a California-based analytics company that has already gone to great lengths to defend its innocence. First, it sought to discredit Trevor Eckhart’s ostensibly damning research with a cease-and-desist letter. Then, CEO Larry Lenhart flatly denied Eckhart’s findings with an impassioned YouTube address. In recent days, the company has markedly softened its stance, arguing that its apps are only designed to meet operator demands and to “make your phones better.” Now, Carrier IQ has elaborated upon these arguments with a more detailed breakdown of how its software functions, and a more substantive defense of its practices. Head past the break to read more.

UK courts to introduce tablets, vow to cut back on tree killing ways

2011
12.03
It may not be retiring the powdered wigs just yet, but according to The Guardian, the British government is ready to replace traditional paper documents with tablets in UK courtrooms. Starting in April, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) will give slates to Welsh and English prosecutors to store all forms and evidentiary items, later extending the offer to judges, jurors and defense lawyers. To start, administrators will give 35 Hewlett-Packard tablets to prosecutors in Norfolk as a test for the bigger roll out, which is estimated to save around £50 million (or around $78 million) in dead trees across the UK. There’s no word yet which tablet HP has in mind, but chances are it will not be the discount rack TouchPad — perhaps a Windows tablet is more in order in this court.

Napster uses up another one of its lives, now fully merged with Rhapsody

2011
12.02
The last dozen years have been quite the roller coaster ride for the Napster crew. The service, which became synonymous with music piracy not all that long after its launch in 1999, made more than its share of high profile enemies, ranging from the RIAA to Metallica. It would soon shut its doors for a first time, thanks to a number of legal challengers. Napster was later reborn as a legit music streaming service, but the beginning of the end for that incarnation was marked earlier this year when Rhapsody, one of the company’s chief competitors, announced plans to acquire the service. Yesterday marked the end of the road for Napster again — the service now fully merged with Rhapsody. Why not pay your respects by breaking out some of the mislabeled, decade-old MP3s that are no doubt lurking on an unused hard drive in the back of your closet?

AT&T 4G LTE now working in parts of New York City

2011
12.02
We got a taste of AT&T’s 4G LTE action last night in the Big Apple with the introduction of its LG Nitro HD, and today, the company has apparently flipped the 4G “on” switch in the City That Never Sleeps — confirming its promise from November. According to tipster reports, some speed tests are showing downloads as fast as 27 Mbps and uploads of 15 Mbps, confirming that the LTE network has indeed gone live in parts of New York City.

Update: To be clear, this is not an official deployment of LTE in NYC by AT&T. So, if you can’t get signal, or if your signal stinks, don’t take it out on them. It’s still in testing!

[Thanks, @SamSavitt]

Verizon Galaxy Nexus landing in Best Buy on December 11th?

2011
12.01
Nexus Prime at Best Buy

The release dates we’ve been hearing for the Verizon version of the Galaxy Nexus have been all over the map. The latest rumors had it pegged for December 8th, and that still may be true for official Big Red shops, but now a source inside Best Buy is telling us the big box electronics retailer won’t have them in stock until the 11th. The image above, supposedly taken from a Best Buy inventory system, lists the SCH-i515 as hitting the stock room on December 11th of 2011. What it doesn’t list, however, is a street date. The phones could go on sale that day, or the next or a week later — it’s really all just guesswork without an official announcement. While the photos certainly seem legit, there are a few discrepancies that give us pause. Particularly, the lighter weight and thinner profile than what is listed on the Google specs page — 9.34mm versus 9.47mm and 140g instead of 150. But, we’re not writing this off as a fake just yet.

[Thanks, anonymous]
